To start a fire, compressed blocks of coal dust or other biomass materials such as sawdust, charcoal, wood chips, peat, or paper. They are used as kindling and fuel. We refer to these as wood briquettes. The term brick, or “brique” in French, is where the name originates.

Briquettes, then, are a biofuel alternative to charcoal and coal. In poor nations where access to cooking fuels is limited, briquettes are primarily utilized. In the developed world, there has been a shift toward the use of briquettes, which are used to heat industrial boilers and generate energy from steam. Cofiring the briquettes with coal produces the heat that powers the boiler.
